The SMS Varsity Girls Volleyball team defeated Charleston Catholic in a hard fought season opener. Trailing by 3 early in the first set, Autumn Thaxton served 12 unanswered points to not only tie up the game, but gain a 2 point lead at 23. With two points left to go, the girls quickly regained possession of the ball and closed out the first set with a score of 25-18.

The second set, again, began with your Lady Redhawks in a deficit as the Lady Irish pulled ahead. However, the Redhawks overcame the adversity with first-class sets from Thaxton, powerful blocks from Avery Gearhart, and crucial digs from both Aubryana Kimble and Addison Querry. The closing minutes saw us tied 24-24 when Lexi Cummings returned the ball in an impressive scramble from the floor. With a one point lead, Melody Craig served to seal the 26-24 win.

The JV team went toe-to-toe with Charleston Catholic in 3 sets. After a tough 10-25 loss in the first set, the Lady Redhawks dominated in the second set. Sixth grader, Rylie Stanley, went on a fierce 15-point serving run, handing the Irish a 25-10 defeat. In the 3rd set Sissonville stayed tough throughout, battling it out against Catholic’s strong serves. Sissonville gave a full team effort utilizing all of their allowed subs. The team did a great job working together and maintaining the drive and focus until the end. They fell just short of the win, finishing the third set 24-26.

As the new school year begins, our middle school volleyball team is gearing up for an exciting

and promising season! With a blend of returning talent and enthusiastic newcomers, this season

is set to be one of growth, teamwork, and competitive spirit. We’re thrilled to welcome back a

strong group of athletes who have been honing their skills over the past few years with

Sissonville Middle School. 

Our veteran players bring experience and leadership to the court, and their dedication is sure to inspire the entire team. Key returnees include Autumn Thaxton, known for her powerful serves and strategic sets; Avery Gearhart, armed with a commanding presence and high-octane blocks; and libero, Aubryana Kimble, whose defensive skills are second to none. Rounding out the varsity squad are hitters- Melody Craig, Alexus Cummings, Erin Chen, and Addison Querry along with Sydney Gearhart at setter who are honing their skills to provide a strong offense for the team; and defensive specialists- Tenley Casto and Brystol Conway who are ready to attack from the back row. Their commitment and knowledge of the game will be instrumental as we face new challenges and opponents. 

Our JV team is marshaled by Elie Johnson who continues to show great promise with her natural leadership and strong communication skills. She is joined with a fantastic crop of newcomers ready to make their mark. These fresh faces are bringing new energy and enthusiasm to our practices. New player stand-outs include Rylie Stanley and Sara Queen with their impressive serves, and Carli Bailey with her never-quit attitude. On the court, they will combine skills with rookies Karissa Carney, Lilly Finney, Stella Bailey, Mia Carpenter, Ivy Chen, Willow Miller, Abby Rorrer, Zoe Taylor, and Paisyn Wiseman. Their eagerness to learn and contribute will be vital in building our team’s success.

As we look ahead, our schedule includes several challenging matches against rival schools and opportunities to showcase our progress in the county tournament. The team’s hard work and dedication will be put to the test, and we’re confident that their passion for the game will shine through. We encourage parents, friends, and classmates to support our team throughout the season. Your cheers and encouragement make a significant difference and help boost our players’ spirits and performance. We’re all looking forward to a season filled with exciting matches, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences.
