Wednesday: County Championship Meet @ Laidley Field

The date of the county track meet has been changed from Monday to Wednesday, May 15th. This is due to updates that need to be made to the track before the state tournament. Please be aware that the shift will put the meet during the bike race on the boulevard. I'm not sure what this will do to traffic, but you may need to plan to leave earlier to arrive at the meet if you are not riding the bus.

For athletes going to the Poca meet tonight. The field events are starting at 4:30. This is earlier than normal. Running is still starting at 5. The bus is still a one way trip and athletes will need to be picked up at Poca High School. The address is:

There are only 8 teams at this meet, so with a little luck, we may be done before 10 pm.

This dance is a huge fundraiser for the track team. If you are available, please reach out by Wednesday morning. If we have enough chaperones lined up, we will go ahead and purchase concessions. Thanks so much!

There will be no track practice today.

I heard back from the meet director this afternoon and unfortunately they did not get the required 12 teams to agree to a meet on Monday. The Patriot Meet has been canceled and will not be rescheduled. 

We will practice on Monday. The next meet will be on Tuesday at Laidley Field.

All SMS athletic practices, games, etc are canceled today, Thursday, April 11, 2024. 

The meet tomorrow, 4/11/24, has been postponed at this time due to the forecasted storms. They are attempting to reschedule it for Monday, 4/15/24. For this to happen, at least 12 teams must agree to the change. Sissonville did agree to the change. I will update everyone once I hear whether the meet will go on. If it does, this means we will have back-to-back meets next week. 

There will be no practice on Thursday. The girls will practice on Friday until 4:15.

Tomorrow there will we an optional practice. It will be indoors at SMS as KCS students are not allowed outside between noon-5 for school activities. Mrs. Shamblin and Mrs. Bridgette will be leading a combined practice with the boys team. If you stay, please check-in with her and be on your best behavior. Practice will end at 4:15 (if you won't have a ride at 4:15, ride the bus home. I don't want to keep other coaches waiting as I won't be there.) Also, you must wait inside until your ride is in the parking lot or the loop. No one can wait for rides outside tomorrow. With the eclipse, I want every family to do what they feel is safest. Practice is optional for this reason.

Monday, 3/18- Practice @ SHS until 4:15. The weather will be cooler. Pack warm layers for practice. If you have 11 practices completed as of today (Sunday, 3/17), tomorrow is the last opportunity to attend your 12th practice before the meet. Meets do not count as a practice and a practice cannot be held on a meet day. 

Tuesday, 3/19- First Track Meet @ Laidley. We will be staying after school and taking a bus to Laidley Field. The bus should arrive at Laidley around 4:15. Events begin at 5pm. New this year is that we are going to try to keep a rolling thread on twitter to update when even are called. (Similar to what we did last year, but on a new platform.) Please subscribe to the SMS Athletics Twitter Feed (@SmsRedhawks ) if you have not done so already. It will be cold on Tuesday evening. Please pack for the meet accordingly. Only athletes that have completed 12 practices will be attending. 

Wednesday, 3/20- Practice @ SHS until 4:15.

Thursday, 3/21- Practice @ SHS until 4:15.

Friday, 3/22- Practice @SMS until 4:15. Pictures will be held on Friday afternoon. You will need jeans and a black t-shirt for the group photo. You can bring. your shorts if you want to change it up or the individual photo. Last year photos ran past the end of the school day, so we will be staying there for practice just in case extra time is needed and the individual photos aren't rushed. Photo forms haven't been distributed to coaches yet, but those will be sent home when they are. 

Today's practice is being moved to SMS. After school - 4:15.

There will be a Saturday practice on 3/16 for athletes that have not hit the 12 pre-meet practice minimum. 8-9 am at the SMS gym.

Coach McCutcheon will be working with the high jumpers tomorrow. She will arrive at the track a little after 4, so please plan to stay about an extra half hour tomorrow. Everyone else will end at regular time.

There will be a practice Saturday morning, 3-9-24, from 8-9 am with Coach Harless at the middle school.

The girls were given a paper at practice today showing them how many more practices they needed in order to be eligible to compete by the first meet on the 19th. (If they were there today, it adds one to the total- the sheets were filled out this morning.) If they need to be at a Saturday practice it is marked on the paper, however anyone that wants to bank a day toward their total can attend tomorrow. Athletes who are also in All County Chorus need to make an effort to be at Saturday practices because it is anticipated they will miss at least two days next week with the concert. 

We are also planning a practice next Saturday, time to be determined. Some athletes will need to be at both Saturday practices. 

The girls track team will be practicing today at the SMS gym from 6:30-7:30. If you have missed more than two practice since the season opened, please make your best effort to be there this evening.

The girls track team will be practicing at the middle school today. 

There are potential storms in our area tomorrow (Friday, March 1) during our practice time. As of now, we are still practicing at the high school. A final decision on location will be made in the early afternoon. Check Big Teams for the decision. Pick-up will be at 4:15 no matter which location we hold practice. 

There will be no after school athletics, today, February 28, 2024 due to the early closing of schools in the Sissonville area due to flooding.

The girls will be at the high school tomorrow. The weather is forecast to be clear, but cool (mid 40s). Be prepared to be outside. Layers are encouraged. Feel free to bring gloves and a hat. You will still need water even when the weather is cooler. 

Thursday will also be the final day of tryouts for the girls. Team selections will be communicated on Friday.

Wednesday (2/28)- Sissonville Middle until 4:15

Thursday (2/29)- Sissonville High until 4:15 (Temperatures are forecast to be in the mid 40s. Please have sweats and dress accordingly. Gloves and hats are welcome for training.)

Girls track will remain at the middle school today. The girls will be finished at 4:15 pm. 

Try-outs for the SMS Girls Track team will be held the week of February 26th. All Big Teams forms must be completed and approved to be eligible to try-out. 

Weather permitting, we will be at the high school track. Big Teams will be updated if we are staying at the middle school. Try-outs will end at 4:15 at either location.

On days that we will be at the high school, athletes may ride their assigned bus to the high school. 

There is not school provided transportation after tryouts or practices. Arrange for transportation to be there for pick-up by 4:15. If you will be riding/walking home with someone other than your parent/guardian, a signed note must be submitted to the coach naming the individual that you will be leaving with. When at the high school, athletes will be required to wait for pick-up next to the fieldhouse. 

Athletes will be dismissed a few minutes early to change clothes for practice on the days we go to the high school. Dress for practice immediately on dismissal as the buses will not wait. Use the restroom before leaving the middle school. There is no guarantee that the restrooms will be unlocked at the track. 

Please be prepared with clothing that can be layered. While it may be warm, windy conditions can make the outside temperature feel cooler. 

You will need:

Running Shoes (regular gym shoes will work for tryouts)

Socks

Shorts/Sweatpants/Leggings

T-Shirt/Sweatshirt

Water

No gum or phones. Phones will need to be kept in your bag. 

A parent meeting will be announced at a later date after tryouts have concluded.

There will be Flex Practices on Thursday, February 22nd and Friday, February 23rd at SMS, after school until 4:15.

All Big Teams forms must be submitted and approved before participating in any team events including flex practices.
